A Seattle-based startup called Inferknow contacted us with an idea about how to turn advertising revenue into carbon offsets. They've developed a Firefox plugin called "Green" that customizes web ads based on browsing habits. Inferknow uses some of the ad revenue to offset the carbon footprint of your computer usage through Carbonfund.org.
This is a cool, innovative idea for getting money to projects, though anyone planning to use it should read up on how the plugin works before installing--in order to customize the ads, Inferknow's plugin tracks your IP address and the URLs you visit, so make sure you're comfortable with that.

This is essentially the same thing you mention -- view ads to offset carbon. This website offsets 3-4 tons of carbon per day, thanks to thousands of dedicated daily users.
