Voluntary Carbon Offsets in Context

Here's a fun fact, in the interest of a little perspective:

Individuals in the United States spent approximately $2.75 million on carbon offsets in 2006. That's about 5 percent of the total voluntary carbon offset market in the U.S., according to an EcoSystem Marketplace survey. And it's about .009 percent of all carbon credits traded in the world last year.

The $2.75 million people in the U.S. spent on offsets last year also happens to be approximately 4 percent of the gross domestic product of the Island nation of Kiribati, which is ranked exactly dead last for GDP in the world.

Sad, isn't it?

What do you all have to say about the credible sources that state global warming is natural. That it is something that occurs naturally and very little of what we do is contributing to it. They're lying, aren't they? Its good to see there are still people who will blindly follow anything they see.

I agree, the world is becoming dirty. We're wallowing in our own filth, with garbage everywhere and dirty emissions blanketing our lands. But unless you can absolutely prove that Global warming is something that WE caused, not something natural or caused by something off world (theres credible sources saying the sun has something to do with it all), then I can't see why contributing so much money is called for.

Under $3 million for carbon offsetting is almost a shock to me, but not quite. I can imagine the concern that people face when thinking of what to do about climate change and if this will really help solve anything. Many probably feel it's a novel approach that cannot create real environmental improvements. But, I think that once people do start offsetting, and see how good it feels to invest their money in a longterm solution, they'll be more likely to change their lifestyles personally and not just financially to do more for the planet. Besides, the cost savings ratio of being more environmentally friendly is often in your favor, especially when you consider the benefits of improved health and wellness from treating your body with more respect. Overall, I hope this trend catches on, even if it takes a few celebrity spokespeople to start the fire!

I think anyone who buys carbon offsets should spend a lot of time really trying to understand BOTH sides of the science behind climate change first. There are a lot of people making money off this and when I read posts that are soliciting funds and then defaming anyone who might feel differently as a "denier" or "flat earther" I get very suspicious.
